Concept Analysis of Patient Autonomy

Abstract
Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify and define the concept of patient autonomy and specific attributes for providing the basic data on variety nursing intervention development which will improve patient autonomy in the clinical nursing practice.

Methods: This study used Walker and Avant`s process of concept analysis.

Results: The attribute of the Patient autonomy has been identified as follows. 1)The Right, 2)The Power, 3)The Dignity, 4)The Information, 5)The Equality. Antecedents of the Patient autonomy are as follows. 1)medical staff involvement, 2)family involvement, 3)the patient`s knowledge and experience 4)the patients` social and cultural values 5)the community regulation. Positive consequences that appear by the patient autonomy are 1) having hope 2)humanism(well-being, good dying), 3)improvement of the quality of life, 4)empowerment, 5)arouse of the human dignity.

Conclusion: Patient autonomy can be defined as the patients` freedom of determining the whole process of the treatment by him/her own rational judgment through building the equal relationship molded by the patients receiving the actual information from the medical team and their family while getting the treatment.
